You start going to the gym regularly, increase your protein intake and add a whey protein shake after your workout. A few weeks later, new pimples start appearing on your cheeks, jawline, chest, shoulders or back.

Naturally, the protein powder becomes a suspect.

The connection between whey protein and acne has become a common discussion among gym-goers, dermatologists and people with acne-prone skin. It is also currently being discussed by Indian dermatologists as part of the wider conversation around diet, fitness supplements and breakouts.

But does whey protein actually cause acne?

The current evidence does not support a simple yes-or-no answer.

Several case reports and observational studies have found more acne among whey-protein users, and some patients have improved after stopping whey. On the other hand, a 2024 randomised controlled trial, the strongest type of study currently available specifically on this question, did not find that daily whey supplementation significantly worsened acne compared with a non-whey supplement.
